Superintendent Update
Dear Sonoma Valley Community,

I am excited and grateful to be one month into my role as Superintendent of Sonoma Valley Unified. This community means a great deal to me, and it has been a joy to return home and work alongside our students, staff, and families.

Since starting on March 1, I have spent much of my time visiting classrooms and seeing our students' learning firsthand. I set a goal of visiting every classroom in the district within my first two months, and I am well on my way. These visits have deepened my appreciation for our staff's incredible work and given me a clearer picture of where we can continue to grow. Our classrooms are where the real work happens, and there is nothing more important than seeing teaching and learning in action.

My first two months in the district are about listening and learning. Over the coming weeks, I will continue gathering input from across the district and reflecting on what I am learning. On May 14, 2026, I will share a Listening and Learning Report with the Board to highlight key themes and insights. I will then work with the Board to turn these insights into clear, focused priorities for our district.

As part of this process, please join us for a Community Input Session on Tuesday, April 14, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Altimira MPR. This is your opportunity to share your perspective and help shape the future of our district. Your voice matters, and your input will directly inform our next steps.

Sonoma Valley is a special place. I have seen our staff in action and know that we are poised for something extraordinary for our students. You are part of that, and together we will make a real difference. I look forward to working together and hope you can join us this Tuesday.

In Partnership,
Jason

Linda Dehzad, Office Manager at Prestwood

Q: How long have you been working for SVUSD?

A: 25 years

Q: What's a moment from your time at SVUSD that made you feel proud to work here?

A: There have been many moments when I’ve felt proud to be part of SVUSD. Having students come back to tell me they felt loved and safe because of our staff, and seeing their smiles and hearing their laughter, means so much to me.

I was also incredibly proud during the recent situation of the pride flag affecting our LGBTQ+ community. Watching students attend the board meeting and stand up respectfully for their rights and for what they believe in was powerful. Seeing them use their voices with courage and conviction reminded me why this work matters and reinforced how important it is to create spaces where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered.

Q: Reflecting on your journey, who was a mentor or champion in your life who helped you get where you are today?

A: My dad immigrated to the United States in 1960 from Norway to create a better life for his family. Two years later, my mom and brother joined him. Once we were all here, he worked two to three jobs to support us and to provide opportunities he never had himself. His work ethic, sacrifice, and determination shaped who I am today.

My husband has been my constant cheerleader and source of strength. He has supported me through many of the hardest times in my life, always believing in me even when I struggled to believe in myself. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without the love, guidance, and encouragement of both of them.

Q: If you could share one piece of wisdom with our students—something you wish you had known earlier in life—what would it be?

A:  Always try to find the good in people, because you never truly know what someone else is going through or what their journey has been. Lead with kindness, understanding, and compassion, and always, always believe in yourself.

Q: What's a song that always puts you in a good mood?

A: I have many favorite songs—but if I had to choose one or two—it would be:
Azizam—by Ed Sheeran
Your song—by Elton John
Happy—by Pharrell Williams

Q: If you could have any superpower for one day, what would it be?

A: I would eliminate the judgment people face because of the color of their skin, their beliefs, or who they love, and bring freedom to countries that do not have it—so that everyone can have the freedom to live as their true selves and we can all exist together in peace.

Camille Garcia, District Social Worker

Q: How long have you been working for SVUSD?

A: 6 years

Q: What's a moment from your time at SVUSD that made you feel proud to work here?

A: Anytime the wellness youth council has an opportunity to share their work with adults and the community.

Q: Reflecting on your journey, who was a mentor or champion in your life who helped you get where you are today?

A: My parents, I've always been close with them and they guided me and gave me the tools and resources to support me in anything I was passionate about.

Q: If you could share one piece of wisdom with our students—something you wish you had known earlier in life—what would it be?

A:  It's okay to change your mind about most things and the ways things end up going are right where you are supposed to be even if it's not where you thought you would end up.

Q: What's a song that always puts you in a good mood

A: Sabotage, Beastie Boys

Q: If you could have any superpower for one day, what would it be?

A: I wish that I can wave the magic wand of what people think therapy is to make them feel better.

Amanda Dowdy, Vice Principal at Sonoma Valley High School

Q: How long have you been working for SVUSD?

A: 4 years of service

Q: What's a moment from your time at SVUSD that made you feel proud to work here?

A: There was a year here where we had a five hour lockdown which was hard for all of us, but once it was released students left with smiles on their faces because they knew  teachers and staff kept them safe and feeling secure.

Q: Reflecting on your journey, who was a mentor or champion in your life who helped you get where you are today?

A: Jason Sutter hired me in Petaluma City Schools and took a chance on me as a student teacher hiring me two days before school started.  He believed in me.  Once I got hired, Laurel Durkin, my mentor teacher, taught me everything I knew about how to be compassionate, empathetic and firm as a teacher.

Q: If you could share one piece of wisdom with our students—something you wish you had known earlier in life—what would it be?

A:  You don’t have to know the path that you are taking will end at a specific point and have it all planned out, let opportunities come to you and say yes more.

Q: What's a song that always puts you in a good mood

A: Miley Cyrus,  Party in the USA

Q: If you could have any superpower for one day, what would it be?

A: Teleport, I’d like to be able to pop into places
