Sonoma Valley Unified School District Approves MacArthur Park Charter School
Sonoma Valley Unified School District Approves MacArthur Park Charter School
The Sonoma Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) Board of Trustees voted 4–1 on January 8, 2026 to approve the charter petition submitted by the MacArthur Park Charter School (MPCS) Board, authorizing the creation of a new public charter school set to open in August 2026. The vote marks a significant development in expanding local educational options for families across the Sonoma Valley.
MacArthur Park Charter School will initially serve students in Transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade (TK–5) with plans to grow into additional grade levels in future years. Petitioners anticipate an enrollment of approximately 189 students for the 2026–27 school year.
The Board’s decision followed a lengthy and engaged public discussion, including a public hearing with community comment and more than three hours of deliberation. While district staff had recommended against approving the petition based on requirements in the California Education Code, trustees supporting the charter emphasized local control and the importance of providing choice for families within the district.
“MPCS represents a collaborative, STEAM-focused educational model developed by community members with deep roots in Sonoma,” said one Board member supporting the approval. MPCS’s mission focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education, inquiry-based learning, and fostering strong family engagement and community partnerships.
The Board’s approval also opens discussions regarding the future facilities use. MPCS has requested use of the Prestwood School site, a campus previously slated for closure. The District has indicated that a formal facilities offer will be developed and presented to the charter leadership by February 1, 2026.
“We believe that expanding educational opportunities while maintaining accountability supports the diverse needs of our community,” stated a District representative following the vote. The Board remains committed to ensuring that the upcoming launch of MacArthur Park Charter School aligns with SVUSD’s strategic goals and statutory requirements.
